POLYGRAPH

POLYGRAPH TESTING

The POLYGRAPH is commonly referred to as being a LIE DETECTOR. Originally patented in 1921, when utilised by a well trained, capable and suitably experienced examiner, the test is capable of  determining if a subject is telling a lie, when answering a specific question.

In South Africa the South African Police Services do make limited use of POLYGRAPH TESTING. It is more commonly utilised within the commercial and domestic sectors as an effective investigative tool. It is however becoming common practice and is being utilised more frequently as an pr-employment screening tool.

HOW IT WORKS

When a person takes a polygraph test, it is important to note that the POLYGRAPH TEST is a subjective test, wherein four (4) to six (6) sensors are attached to the person under going such a test.  These sensors are connected to a laptop wherein the multiple "POLY" signals from the individual sensors are

received, recorded and interpreted. These individual sensors record the persons

(i) breathing rate, (ii) pulse, (iii) blood pressure and (iv) perspiration.

THE POLYGRAPH TEST

When the polygraph test starts, the examiner asks three or four simple control questions in order to establish the norms for the person's signals. Once this has been done, then the real questions being tested by the polygraph are asked. Both during and after the test, a polygraph examiner can look at the graphs and can see whether the vital signs changed significantly on any of the questions. In general, a

poly Chart

significant change (such as a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, increased perspiration) indicates that the person is lying. When a well-trained examiner uses the polygraph examination tool, he or she can very easily detect lying with high accuracy.
